COVID-19 pandemic claims another life in the Northern Health region

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another life in the Northern Health region, the Ministry of Health reported on Friday.
The death brings the region’s death toll from the pandemic to 270.
The ministry reported 39 new cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region on Friday. The number of active cases in the region rose by one from Thursday, to 239.
Eleven people in the Northern Health region were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Friday, according to data reported by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. Of those 11, eight were listed in intensive care.
Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 18,204 cases of COVID-19 reported in the Northern Health region, of which 17,689 people have recovered.
A total of 415,430 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the Northern Health region, as of Friday.
As of Dec. 16, 88 per cent of people aged 12 and up in the Prince George local health area had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 83 per cent had received at least two doses, the B.C. CDC reported. In addition, 20 per cent of children aged five to 11 years old had received their first dose and 64 per cent of seniors aged 70 and older had received a third booster shot.
As of Friday, 86.9 per cent of British Columbians aged five and up had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 82.5 per cent had received a second dose.
As of Friday, no new cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 had been detected in the Northern Health region. One case of the highly-infectious variant of concern was reported in the Northern Health region on Dec. 14.
There have been 302 cases of Omicron detected in B.C as of Friday, the Ministry of Health reported.
