Coworkers raise over $1K in food and clothing for homeless persons in Prince George

A group of pipeline workers are raising money to give back to those in need

At the corner of Third Avenue and George Street this morning (Nov.22) a group of coworkers handed out sandwiches, donuts, coffee, and warm clothing to those in need.

“I’ve been dealing with outreach like this where I am from back in Saskatchewan,” says Cody Cutler, who is now working in Prince George with SA Energy on the Coastal GasLink pipeline.

“I have some issues with my kidney and I was in the hospital the other day and I was talking to some homeless people in the area here and getting their story,” says Cutler.

He says after that experience he decided he wanted to do something to give back, so he reached out to a few of his coworkers to see if they would be interested in contributing.

“We have about 50 hands on our crew, so I would go around on breaks and told everyone what was going on, and pretty much everyone gave $20, but some gave $100 or $200 dollars,” says Cutler.

“We went out and got a bunch of warm clothing, coffee, sixty subway sandwiches and now we are out here doing some outreach.”

The group gathered $1,300 in donations with $1,000 for warm clothing and $300 for the food, coffee and donuts.

“It means quite a bit, just to be able to put a smile on someone’s face,” says Cutler. “You don’t know their story I want to sit down talk to them, find out what’s going on, learn their story and see if I can help them in some way.”

Cutler says he hopes to continue his outreach work while in Prince George and hopes to inspire others to take the initiative to give back to those struggling in the community.

“We are here, and you guys have been nothing but good to us, so we want to give back to the less fortunate,” says Cutler. “I’m hoping if people see young guys like us out here giving back to the community then some of the young people in this community will build on that.”
