Cariboo Prince George MP Todd Doherty during question period on Oct. 7 argued the previous Conservative government "set the stage for the Liberal government to finalize a new softwood lumber agreement."

Cariboo-Prince George MP Todd Doherty is in Washington this week to talk trade.

As co-chair of the Softwood Lumber Taskforce, the Conservative MP says that the next three days will present an opportunity to discuss a new softwood accord, as well as NAFTA, the environment and defence spending.

"I know that the hardworking forestry families in my riding of Cariboo-Prince George are looking for answers on how the lumber industry will remain competitive with U.S. tariffs expected as early as the spring," Doherty said.

Canada is currently without a softwood lumber agreement.

"These meetings are an important step in building relationships with our American counterparts and we are seeing a willingness on both sides to work together to reach a consensus on some of these issues. However, the reality remains that we have not been without a softwood lumber agreement for the better part of a year-and-a-half. Prime Minister Trudeau failed to make this a priority when he first took office and the Liberal government has been playing catch up ever since," Doherty said.
