The threat of flooding along the Chilako River has dropped enough for the Fraser-Fort George Regional District to rescind an evacuation order for 39 properties along Mud River Road.

The order remains in place for one property while an evacuation alert is still in effect for the remaining properties in the area southwest of the city.

The downgrade was invoked late morning Tuesday, four days after the order had been put in place, and came after the River Forecast Centre has downgraded warnings to flood watches for the Chilako as well as for waterways in the Cariboo and Chilcotin regions.

The River Forecast Centre is maintaining high streamflow advisories for the Salmon River near Salmon Arm and the Dean River north of Bella Coola, but it has ended the advisory for the Nazko Basin west of Prince George.

"Snowmelt rates have eased over the past several days with cooling temperatures and in some locations overnight freezing," agency said in a website posting.

"Most rivers have experienced a peak level and have been slowly declining over the last day or more."

However, depending on rainfall patterns, the trend could be reversed, the agency warned. It also advised people to stay clear of the fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks.
