Family Day activities in Prince George this weekend

Here are a few things to do during B.C.’s Family Day long weekend.

For Family Day the Railway Museum is hosting the Celebration of Lights Family Day Light Up for free on Friday, Feb. 17 from 4 to 8 p.m.

BC Family STEAM Day at The Exploration Place, 333 Becott Place, goes all day Monday, starting at 9 a.m. This event is for all ages and everyone is invited to participate in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics activities for free as part of the museum’s second annual BC Family STEAM Day.

Celebration of Lights Family Day Light Up takes place at the Central BC Railway & Forestry Museum, 850 River Rd., for free Feb. 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. Enjoy more than 150,000 lights and light displays, rail cars and buildings while exploring the eight-acre museum park. Stop and warm up at one of the many fires around the park and hop on the Cottonwood Railway for a spin around the park, complete the scavenger hunt to be entered to win a gift certificate for a family dinner, and make sure to grab a free museum colouring book and crayons.

Downtown Winterfest on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Veterans Plaza in front of City Hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shop, eat, explore, thrive in downtown Prince George. There will be a Legion pancake breakfast, lunch and snacks at 1116 Sixth Ave., from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There’s a friendly smores' competition for people’s taste-testing of treats and food vendors on hand and a winter playground, ice slide, snow wall and snow and ice sculptures to enjoy.

Family Day in Barkerville Historic Town & Park Sunday, Feb. 19 beginning at 10 a.m. will see guests enjoy hotdogs, hot cocoa, a crackling bonfire, and outdoor games for all ages. Hosted by Barkerville's historic interpreters. Snowshoe trails are packed and ready for guests to explore.

Canfor Leisure Pool, 4249 18th Ave., is open Monday, Feb. 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 670 Quebec St., and is a fully accessible facility providing state-of-the-art amenities. Features include a water elevator to help visitors in and out of the pool, a NinjaCross pool obstacle course, a large waterslide, leisure pool with play features, hot tub, sauna, steam room and more. For more information call 250-561-7636.

Ice Oval is open Monday, Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for all skaters of all levels with all types of skates. Admission is $2 per person or $5 per family. There are several other outdoor neighbourhood rinks to enjoy and are posted on the city’s map at https://www.princegeorge.ca/media/1436.

Ness Lake Bible Camp is open for free fun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday. The climbing wall and gym will be open for visitors. There are also building blocks and Lego to play with in the gym. There’s a colouring contest, snow colouring activities and ice fishing available from huts set up around holes cut into the lake ice. All visitors will be served a free chili-and-bun hot lunch from 11 a.m. to1 p.m. and throughout the day there will be firepits for roasting hot hogs, making bannock and marshmallow smores.
