Five for Friday: Prince George February events you can’t miss

From watching the big game to watching big booty shaking for charity

Tomorrow is the first day of February.

We know, we know,... we can’t believe it either; that first month flew by, but now we can look forward to a busy slate of events for February in Prince George.

As 2020 is a leap year, we get an extra day to spend quality time with family, friends and colleagues and, fortunately, Feb. 29 falls on a Saturday!

PrinceGeorgeMatters has compiled a list of five can’t-miss events this coming month, each displaying a little bit of something for everybody.

SUPER BOWL 54 VIEWING PARTIES

The big game is this Sunday (Feb. 2) to cap off the 100th season of the NFL.

The San Francisco 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs at 3:30 p.m. Pacific and you know Prince George has several hot spots to take it all in and celebrate football with fellow fans.

Notable local restaurants putting together a Super Bowl bash include the 1st Avenue Tavern, The Black Clover, Trench Distilling and Brewing, the Thirsty Moose (UNBC), the Westwood Pub and Luca Italian Restaurant.

DOWNTOWN WINTERFEST

You better not be tired of the cold and snow, because it’s almost time to celebrate winter.

The fourth annual Downtown Winterfest invites residents to come down to Canada Games Plaza, take in fun-filled activities for the whole family and embrace the season.

There’s going to be snow and ice sculptures again this year from international award-winning artists, an ice slide, the “SMORE Downtown” contest and a winter market inside the Prince George Civic Centre.

Winterfest runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9.

DIAMONDS ARE FUR-EVER

Put a handsome bunch of the Hurly Burly Delicious Dozen, some heart-stealing rescue dogs, and a group of kind-hearted women who just want to have fun together at the same event and, what have you got?

The Prince George Humane Society would like to promise that what happens at its Feb. 29 LADIES-ONLY fundraiser at the Coast Inn of the North stays at the Coast Inn of the North.

The Hurly Burly Booty men will shake the crowd with games, pose for boudoir photos and sell 50/50 tickets with proceeds going to the Humane Society.

Guests should also be prepared to fall in love with some of the dogs who are being cared for at the Humane Society’s shelter.

Diamonds are Fur-ever kicks off a new fundraising strategy for the Charity as tickets are $60 each and include appetizers.

PrinceGeorgeMatters is the proud title sponsor of Diamonds are Fur-ever.

FRANCO-FUN WINTER FESTIVAL

It’s the 35th edition of Prince George’s annual festival that celebrates local French-Canadian culture.

Running each day until Saturday, Feb. 8, Le Cercle des Canadiens Français of Prince George (CCFPG) will host marquee activities slated to get the entire family involved and appreciate the cultural diversity of our city.

This includes an art exhibition, senior’s luncheon, movie night, interactive school show, concerts and the infamous Sugar Shack Brunch on the final day of FrancoFUN, which showcases snow sculptures, maple taffy on snow, a sawing contest, hammering, snowshoeing, and live music.

More information can be found on the CCFPG website.

THE BIRDS AND THE BEES

Catch the love bug and treat your Valentine to a Prince George show guaranteed to make audiences laugh.

Miracle Theatre is recreating The Birds and the Bees, a tale of a beekeeper and his endless quest for the perfect woman, and it took the production company two years to secure the rights.

Nationally recruited actors will take the Art Space stage, above Books and Company on Third Avenue.

Proceeds from the show will go towards the Prince George Community Foundation’s Children of Prince George Fund, which is set to eclipse over $150,000 with this production.

Tickets are $34 and are available at Books and Company (1685 3 Ave); the show runs from Feb. 12 to Mar. 4.
