Summer is already here and Prince George schools are almost officially done for the 2018-19 calendar year.

This means, for the next three months, kids may get a little bit bored, and, at sometimes, behind on the opportunities to learn, grow, and explore.

The City of Prince George has rolled out a list of summer camps for the months of July and August for children ages five to 17 that span a spectrum of talent and interest.

We’ve picked five of those camps that stand out, ranging from spending time with abandoned animals to picking up a guitar and rockin’ out!

Regardless of your niche, check out these five Prince George camps:

TWO RIVERS CREATIVITY CAMPS

Each week between July 8 and Aug. 30, Two Rivers Gallery is hosting 12 different themed camps, giving kids a chance to explore various forms of creativity.

Young minds will express their artistic creation, designing landscapes for imaginary worlds, take part in brain teaser games to get the inventing wheels spinning, expand their colour knowledge with paint, and channelling their inner sculptor with clay.

Themes include Animal Kingdom, Inventor’s Lab, and Abstract Art.

More information and costs are available on the Two Rivers Gallery website.

Parents, kids are expected to bring a lunch and snacks, but please, no nuts!

NORTH CARIBOO SPCA ANIMAL WORKSHOPS

Got an animal lover amongst your children? This camp is a MUST for them.

The North Cariboo branch of the B.C. SPCA in Prince George is putting on a series of animal workshops through the summer.

During the one-week camps, kids will interact with animals in care, will be given engaging tasks on how to properly take care of them, learn new facts, and “develop positive, respectful relationships between people, animals and nature.”

Children born between 2008 and 2012 can register with the SPCA and can choose to spend either two, three, or fives days in an assigned week.

A schedule, fees, and more information are on the SPCA website.

Because what kid doesn’t like to pet and snuggle with a puppy?

UNBC ACTIVE MINDS

You know your kid is a genius? Got a kid that likes to learn? Want to keep them in the loop when it comes to science and technology? Maybe become the next Iron Man?

Well, UNBC is offering children ages six to 12 the chance to brighten their minds with the Active Minds summer camp at the university campus in Prince George.

Between July 2 and August 23, the school will keep your kids from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and teach them several scientific fields, like coding, environmental biology, chemistry, and even medicine.

Kids will get the chance to be outside in the wilderness, conduct experiments in a lab, and (arguably the best part) use LEGO to create their own robot.

More information and costs are available on UNBC’s website.

Let’s develop the brains of the next generation!

MUSIC LESSONS

Let’s face it, air instruments aren’t as good as playing the real things.

If you have a little Eric Clapton in your home or a piano prodigy that wants to harness their skills, Long and McQuade in Prince George is offering music lessons for young students and families this summer.

The business says group and private sessions are available including acoustic and electric guitar, piano, drums, vocals, orchestral strings, brass, woodwinds, and much more!

You can contact Long and McQuade by calling 250-563-0692 or emailing [email protected].

Already know how to play your instrument, learn a new one and become a one-person band!

YMCA OF NORTHERN B.C. CAMPS

The great outdoors! We’re surrounded by it in Prince George (duh).

So if your kid likes being in the woods and wants to gain life experiences, the YMCA of Northern B.C. offers a variety of camps centred around outdoor education and social development.

This includes Camp Kanannaq (West Lake), Aurora Leadership (exploring leadership theory and backcountry skills) and Borealis (journey of self-discovery).

Ages for each camp ranges from five to 17 years old; all camps are overnight.

More information is up on the YMCA of Northern B.C. website.

Every kid deserves the chance to go to camp!
