A thunderstorm that hit the city Tuesday afternoon brought heavy rainfall and flash flooding that swamped motorists and forced emergency first responders to close several downtown streets.
Prince George RCMP officers were called to assist drivers whose vehicles stalled on roads that suddenly turned into lakes.
The roads most badly affected by the flooding were Winnipeg Street between 13th and 17th Avenue and the light industrial area east of Queensway. Winnipeg Street as well as stretches of First, Second and Third Avenues were closed until the storm sewers were able to drain away the massive puddles.
The water reportedly damaged some buildings and left a gaping hole on Winnipeg Street close to where the road had to be rebuilt a couple years ago after a large sinkhole developed.
Environment Canada is predicting more thundershowers for Wednesday and Thursday and showers are also expected on Friday.
