Floor crumbling at Prince George's downtown arena

Removal of ice surface at Kopar Memorial Arena reveals deep divots in concrete; senior lacrosse league forced to move games
Prince George Senior Lacrosse season opener May 4/22 10
The BHL Bandits (red) took on the Quesnel Crossfire (blue) last Thursday in Quesnel in Prince George Senior Lacrosse League action. Cole Paciejewski led the Bandits with eight goals and six assists in a 25-2 victory.

After 65 years, the concrete floor at Kopar Memorial Arena has seen better days.

Arena staff who took the ice out at the aging downtown arena last week found a deep hole in one corner of the floor which forced postponement of the season-opening game in the Prince George Senior Lacrosse Association.

“It needs to be resurfaced, it’s deep enough to break an ankle,” said PGSLA commissioner Don Wittmeier.

Tonight’s scheduled game between the Northland Nissan Assault and the Scamp Transport Devils has been moved from Kopar to Kin 1 (8 p.m. start).

The crumbling Kopar floor forced the game between the Devils and Northland Nissan Assault to be rescheduled to a yet-to-be announced date.

The league played two of its games last week in Quesnel and will be back there for games Wednesday and Thursday.

The bulk of the remaining schedule will be played at Kin 1.  There is just one more game this season, June 7, scheduled for Kopar.

Kopar Memorial Arena, formerly known as Prince George Coliseum, opened in in 1958 and is nearing the end of its lifespan. It has been identified for potential replacement under the city’s Civic Core Plan.
