Fourth of July fires keep Prince George firefighters busy

Prince George Fire Rescue crews also respond to apartment fire downtown

Thursday was a busy night for Prince George firefighters and once again the Moccasin Flats encampment was at the centre of their attention.

At about 10:23 p.m., Prince George Fire Rescue crews from two halls were called to the scene of a structure at the east end of the camp along Lower Patricia Boulevard near the ATCO trailers soon to become BC Housing’s 43-unit transitional housing facility.

One of the encampment structures was fully involved with flames when the first fire crew arrived and the fire spread to two adjoining tiny home structures. While that fire was being extinguished, a second fire was observed in a nearby structure, which was then extinguished with handlines.

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters reported.

Damage is estimated at $2,000.

Both fires are of suspicious origin.

There have been dozens of structure fires PGFR has had to respond to at the Moccasin Flats camp over the past two years.

Minutes after the call went out about the encampment fire, at 10:37 p.m., PGFR was called to a kitchen fire in a large residential building in the 500-block of Dominion Street.

Crews from four city fire halls responded to the call and found one unit full of black smoke and they put the fire out using a handline. Firefighters remained at the scene to clear the smoke from the building until it was safe for other residents to return to their homes.

There were no injuries reported in that fire, which was determined to be accidental, starting in the stove are of the kitchen.

Damage is pegged at $50,000.
