Story Institute Acting School founder, Michael Coleman, is hosting three free acting workshops in Prince George on Jan. 10.

Actor, writer, director, Michael Coleman, best known for his appearances in Once Upon a Time, X-Men: Evolution, Hello Kitty, DBZ, Supernatural, Smallville and Stargate, is offering free acting workshops at Story Institute Acting School on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

The Prince George acting school is putting out the call for people to explore their creativity during three workshops, each set for different ages.

“It’s all about recreating the human experience,” Coleman, the Story Institute founder, said. “So people can come in, be themselves and just be ready to have some fun.”

Coleman's career started more than 30 years ago in anime and then he moved over to film and television, professional stand up, improv and sketch comedy.

“Over the years I’ve been really lucky to work as an actor, writer, director and the more I do it, and the more exposure and opportunity I get to do big shows and understand that anybody can do this, the more I want to share it with others,” Coleman said.

Acting is still his favourite out of all the things he does in the entertainment industry, he added.

“Nothing beats the rush of performing,” Coleman said. “I know a lot of people want to do this but they feel like they’re not really sure about it, they think they’re not really good at it and don’t have any experience but that’s how every single one of us gets started.”

You don’t have to be the bigger-than-life personality or feel like you’re born with the skills, he added.

“It’s a learned skill like anything else,” Coleman said. “Anybody who wants to do it can do it. You just gotta take those first steps.”

And Coleman will be right by your side during the workshops.

“Some of my favourite TV shows that I watch right now have students of mine starring in them and there’s no greater joy,” Coleman said.

During the acting workshop, there will be many group exercises that will give people a chance to shine in different ways, he added.

During the sessions, people will learn the art of expressing oneself on stage and screen.

Voice-over techniques will be explored for optimum vocal performance and narration for cartoons, commercials and games.

During Improv Fun participants will explore the magic of spontaneous creativity and quick thinking.

There’s room for 20 people in each group for ages six to 11 years, 12 to 17 years and adults 18 years and older.

The workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Excalibur Theatre Arts, 1773 Lyon Street South. The workshop for children six to 11 goes from 3:30 to 5 p.m., for adults 18 years and older goes from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and for youth 12 to 17 years goes from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
