Drive BC is advising travelers heading north from Prince George on Highway 97 that the road is closed in both directions due to the wildfire near Fort Nelson.
The closure west of the town stretches for 170 kilomwetres, from Prophet River Subdivision Road to recreation road.
Highway 77, which leads to the Northwest Territories, is also closed due to another fire 138 km south of the B.C.-Northwest Territories border.
The Parker Lake fire west of Fort Nelson (two km northwest of Parker Lake) has grown to 5,280 hectares and winds from the southwest are expected today, putting the town in further jeopardy. Fort Nelson and Fort Nelson First Nation have been evacuated and people have been directed to emergency social service centres in Fort St. John and Prince George.
