The federal budget features at least two items that caught Coun. Garth Frizzell's eye.

Frizzell, who sits on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities board of directors, said Wednesday he sees potential help from Ottawa on the housing and transit front.

The governing Liberals have dedicated $11.2 billion over 11 years to a national housing strategy. The long-term commitment appeals to Frizzell.

"This is good for us because even though in B.C. we're not responsible for social-affordable housing, that piece, when it's not done, the results of that land in municipal responsibilities," Frizzell said.

A further $20 billion, also over 11 years, is going to transit. Not only is the commitment long-term but the funding will be based on population and ridership - or allocation based - rather than grant based.

"It's a bit of a lottery if you're putting a grant in as to whether you're getting funded or not," Frizzell said.

Frizzell was not sure yet how the housing money will be distributed.

"Some of the details are pretty hard to nail down in the early hours," he said.
