The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating the death of a man who was being arrested by Prince George RCMP last week.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that a man suspected of being intoxicated was detained on Wednesday, Nov. 6. He was taken to police headquarters.
The man was found in an unresponsive state in a cell later that night and taken to the University Hospital of Northern BC, where he was determined to be in critical condition.
The IIO, an independent civilian agency that investigates police-related deaths and injuries, was told of the situation.
The man died in hospital on Monday, Nov. 11, the IIO reports. Investigators will now look to determine what role, if any, police action or inaction played in the man’s death.
The IIO asks anyone with video footage or relevant information about the incident to call (toll-free) 1-855-446-8477 or submit it the contact form at iiobc.ca.
