An impaired driver who took off at high speed and ran a red light to evade police on Thursday night got away – but not for long.
Just before 9 p.m. on Thursday police received a report of a dangerous driver in the College Heights area, according to a statement issued by police on Monday. The witness said they saw the vehicle swerving in its lane and nearly caused a collision while passing.
Officers arrived in the area and spotted the vehicle a short time later in a parking lot in the 6300 block of Southridge Avenue. Police saw the vehicle stunting and doing doughnuts in the parking lot.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated away at high speed and ran a red light to get away.
However, just before midnight police caught up with the vehicle as it pulled into a residential driveway in College Heights.
Police arrested the driver for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impounded the vehicle. In addition to the impaired driving charge, the driver is facing multiple violation tickets.
“This is an example of how impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk. It also showcases the dedication our police have to catching impaired drivers and taking them off our streets,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jennifer Cooper said in a statement issued to media.
