Introducing the Northern BC Crime Stoppers Society.
This is the new name for the now-former Prince George Crime Stoppers Association as an increase in calls from communities outside the city led to the official decision today (Nov. 4).
The switch comes in its 35th year of operations for the northern capital, but due to the disbanding of programs in neighbouring cities and towns, a new expansion course has been set in serving the entire region.
“Crime Stoppers programs in Quesnel, South Cariboo, Valemount, Vanderhoof, Williams Lake and, most recently, Northeast BC Crime Stoppers have ceased operations,” the Society says in a statement.
“Currently, there are only four Crime Stoppers programs in British Columbia north of Kamloops: Northern BC Crime Stoppers, Bulkley Valley Crime Stoppers, Terrace Crime Stoppers, and Prince Rupert Crime Stoppers.”
In 2019, Prince George Crime Stoppers received a record 750 calls, which was a 28 per cent increase compared to 2018, while more than 12,000 tips to organizations across the province.
The tips resulted in 14 arrests, six cases cleared and 11 cash rewards approved in the amount of $2,490.
Drug seizure amounts totaled $1,827,361, while $545,657 in cash was recovered.
Crime Stoppers also provides a vehicle to local law enforcement in allowing citizens to anonymously report a crime.
