The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) is investigating injuries sustained by one person while in a Quesnel RCMP detachment cell.

The affected person told the IIO that around 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 8, 2024, police responded to a call concerned for their wellbeing at home.

They later reported being injured while in RCMP custody the following evening.

The IIO, after being notified, launched its investigation on Feb. 13, 2025.

The investigation will determine whether the injuries meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, and whether there is any connection to police actions or inaction.

The Police Act defines serious harm as an injury that may result in death, cause serious disfigurement, or lead to substantial loss or impairment of mobility of the body as a whole or of the function of any limb or organ.
