Rain in the forecast Sunday after a smoky Saturday in Prince George

A special air quality statement was issued for the city

A special air quality statement is in effect in Prince George on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Smoke from BC wildfires has drifted over the city and area. "Elevated pollution levels are expected or occurring," the statement reads. "Several regions of central BC are being impacted or are likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke over the next 24-48 hours."

Wildfires are raging near Burns Lake, prompting the evacuation of the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako.

The BC WIldfire Service reported that a 411-square-kilometre fire at Sabina Lake is growing toward Ootsa Lake.

Another fire is burning along the North Blackwater River about 130 km west of the Quesnel.

Hot, dry conditions are a factor, the service reported.

But it says a spate of hot weather has been a factor.

Environment Canada updated the air quality statement at 11:26 a.m., adding that the next update will come Sunday.

Weather-wise, expect a high of 22 C Sunday and clouds with showers. After an overnight low of 7 C, Monday will see sunshine and a high of 18 C.
