The Houston, B.C. native is the 25th captain in the Cougars’ 26-year history and was officially announced by his predecessor Josh Curtis via social media.
“I’m honoured to have been chosen to be the captain,” said Maser in a team release. “It’s special being from north, growing up in the area and now leading this team I followed since I was a young kid. I’m very thankful of my teammates and the other leaders we have on this team. It’s humbling.”
Maser has suited up in 172 WHL games, all with Prince George, and currently leads the Cats this year with 11 points in 16 games, including six goals.
He is coming off a career-high 30 goals from 2018-19 and was second in team scoring with 42 points.
Maser’s WHL stats consists of 106 total points with 67 goals and 39 assists.
Head Coach and General Manager Mark Lamb says the forward has a lot of leadership qualities that made him a no-brainer for the ‘C.’
“You watch him play, you watch him practice, everything is 100 percent,” said Lamb. “He’s a great example for not only the veterans to follow but the young players as well. You need that work ethic in the organization and he sets the standard really high.”
Maser is also a product of the Cariboo Cougars from the 2015-16 season, compiling 37 points in 32 games with the major midget club.
Chicago Blackhawks draft pick Cole Moberg, Ilijah Colina and Ryan Schoettler will each wear an ‘A’ as an alternate captain for Prince George.
The Cougars take on the Medicine Hat Tigers tonight (Nov. 6), 7 p.m. from the CN Centre before facing the Victoria Royals in a weekend doubleheader this Friday (Nov. 8) and Saturday (Nov. 9).
