Josh Maser’s hat-trick caps off Prince George Cougars’ triumph over Vancouver

Captain Clutch came through for the Cougars last night (March 6).

Josh Maser was spot-on at the CN Centre against the Giants, including potting a goal that not only sent hats flying over the glass and onto the ice, but sealed a 5-4 victory over Vancouver in Prince George’s second-last home game of the 2019-20 season.

The Houston, B.C. product recorded his eighth multi-point performance of the year and the second hat-trick of his Western Hockey League (WHL) career.

His first hat-trick came on Teddy Toss Night 2017 (Dec. 10) in a 5-4 loss against Victoria.

By virtue of Seattle’s 6-0 loss to Kelowna Friday, the Cats are now seven points back of the Thunderbirds for that all-important final wild-card spot in the 2020 playoff race.

Their record now stands at 19-34-4-4 with seven stints remaining and keeping up a two-game winning streak.

Maser increased his Cougars’ team season-scoring lead to 46 points, including goals 26 to 28 yesterday, bringing his career total to over 140 in 217 games.

Taylor Gauthier backed up the Cougars between the pipes with 38 saves on 42 shots.

Cole Moberg had two helpers on Maser’s first and third goals, bringing his season total to 36 points.

Prince George led the contest three times at 1-0, 4-3 and the ultimate 5-4 final.

Special teams went 66 per cent on the power-play (2/3) and 50 per cent on the penalty kill (2/4) as the Giants capitalized twice when given the man-advantage.

The Cougars will took to complete the sweep of Vancouver tonight (March 7), 7 p.m. from the CN Centre.

This is the last home game of 2019-20 and is also Fan Appreciation Night.

After today, Prince George will finish the year with a six-game road trip, all against B.C. Division teams.
