Several Prince George residents struggle with maintaining a home since most, if not all, of the family has left the nest.
As a way to understand the current market and what issues we face locally when it comes to housing for seniors, the City is hosting a symposium on the subject, in conjunction with the Prince George Council of Seniors, at the Civic Centre next month.
The purpose of the full-day informational event is to give seniors current and relevant facts on housing options, what they need to make a better transition, and the issues they face when downsizing from a bigger space.
"One of the fundamental elements of a healthy and inclusive community is having a range of housing types to accommodate people of different ages, life stages, incomes, and abilities," says City Social Development Coordinator Sarah Brown. "The City of Prince George plays a key role in housing in the community, and as such is excited to offer this Symposium to community members."
A B.C. seniors advocate will also be on-hand for the symposium.
Isobel Mackenzie is slated to be the keynote speaker and will share facts about her role in the community and in the province, while also discussing what she believes are the issues facing seniors today in terms of housing.
Presentations are also on the docket from the City, B.C. Housing, and Northern Health and will each include a question-and-answer session.
The symposium is free to attend thanks to an age-friendly grant Prince George received from the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM), and takes place Thursday, May 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Those wishing to attend are asked to register via Eventbrite’s website, or you can call the Prince George Council of Seniors directly at 250-564-5888.
