Council heard details from a new report on plans to replace the playground at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, a project that will see the play area closed for an extended period.
Blake McIntosh, the city’s director of civic operations, said the playground, which is more than 20 years old, doesn’t meet current standards. Its replacement is expected to cost $3 million.
Because the park, which is located on land that was once a Lheidli T’enneh village, is a protected archaeological site, the playground replacement requires a particular process. On-site assessments will be required, using electromagnetic and ground-penetrating radar, which means the existing play structures will have to be taken out over the weeks ahead.
The second phase of the project is slated for 2025, which means the playground will be closed until its completion.
McIntosh could not provide councillors with an exact timeline for how long the playground will be closed, but said the public will be kept informed.
