Randall William Callan is being remembered as a dedicated public servant who cared deeply for his family.
Sworn in as a provincial court judge in Prince George in 2012, Callan died Sunday at the age of 64. An obituary described him as "immensely respected, regarded, and enjoyed by his family and peers."
Callan was born in 1953 in Portage La Prairie, Man., and studied history at the University of Manitoba. He served many years in the Canadian Forces, beginning in 1972 as a logistics officer and eventually serving as a legal officer. He served in many parts of the world including deployments in Cyprus, Aviano, Afghanistan and Sudan.
"His real presence in a room, in both stature and personality, as well as his welcoming nature and boisterous laugh will never be forgotten," the obituary noted.
He is survived by his wife Patti, sons Joel, Spencer and Casey, and his sister Jill.
Friends, family and colleagues will gather today for a memorial service at the First Baptist Church at 483 Gillette St. at 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, attendees are encouraged to make donations to the B.C. Cancer Foundation or to the Canadian Forces veterans' charity Soldier On.
