Orange Shirt Day was started to remember the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada. The last residential school closed in 1996.

Monday is Orange Shirt Day, the nickname for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Declared a statutory holiday by the federal government in 2021, the day will see the closure of federal offices and a day off for workers who have the holiday designated in their contracts.

In BC, it was declared a statutory holiday in March 2023.

Schools in Prince George and area will be closed.

Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon and Prince Edward Island also observe the statutory holiday on Sept. 30.

The grassroots Orange Shirt Day campaign was begun by Phyllis Webstad, who drew from her experiences and the experiences of other residential school survivors of St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School near Williams Lake. The day was observed for several years before it became a holiday.
