With 39 days left in the campaign, Cariboo-Prince George NDP candidate Trent Derrick is hoping to make history.
On Thursday afternoon, Derrick celebrated the opening of his campaign headquarters with a small but enthusiastic crowd of about two dozen volunteers and supporters.
The office, at 3355 Eighth Ave. (beside Spruceland mall), will serve as a clearing house for stacks of orange lawn signs and volunteer sign-up sheets.
"When we look back 25 years from now what we're going to say is 'We were there. We brought in a government that supports small business. We brought in a government that supports First Nations and wants to build a respectful relationship,'" Derrick said.
"That's what we're going to do with the New Democratic Party - we're going to create history and we're going to build a Canada we're proud of."
The last time the area elected an NDP MP was in 1988, when Brian Gardiner represented the former Prince George-Bulkley Valley riding for one term before being unseated by Dick Harris.
An NDP government wants to build a country that's known for being environmentally progressive and economically sound, said Derrick, and that when he's out door-knocking he hears a positive reaction to change.
"It's going to be a long six weeks but it's going to go fast and come Oct. 19 I look forward to being your MP," he said.
Derrick's office is the second campaign office opened in Prince George.
Conservative candidates Todd Doherty and Bob Zimmer cut the ribbon on their joint office (1520 Third Ave.) on Aug. 12. Liberal candidates Tracy Calogheros and Matt Shaw will celebrate their campaign office opening (1299 Third Ave.) on Saturday at 10 a.m.
