First responders and rescue crews have called off a search of the Nechako River after an early morning report of someone jumping in near the John Hart Bridge.
"The search for a person that went into the Nechako River near Prince George early this morning has been suspended until further notice," said a statement from RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Craig Douglass late Thursday afternoon.
According to Prince George RCMP, the report came in around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Visual checks of the river showed no signs of the person and officers found clothing (a green large or extra-large Bugatti men's jacket and grey/green toque with a pom-pom) along the shore line where the person was seen entering the river, under the bridge.
The Prince George Search and Rescue Society and Prince George Fire Rescue were immediately called to assist, but due to darkness and ice conditions on the river, boats couldn't be used.
Police, fire and search-and-rescue personnel made the decision at 1:45 a.m. to suspend the search until daylight.
The search resumed by land and air, weather permitting, Thursday morning.
Anyone with information about this incident or who this person may be is asked to contact the Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300.
