The University Hospital of British Columbia (UHNBC) now has a safer area to perform emergency births.
UHNBC delivers more than 1,500 babies per year and roughly 20 per cent of those actually come from residents outside the immediate area of Prince George.
Close to 20 per cent of those births is emergency c-sections, with 60 per cent being deemed high risk, premature, or multiple births.
Dr. Marijo Oduilo says in a release the operating room will provide peace of mind for parents and loved ones, and a safer environment for babies to be born in while also causing less disruption for those surgeries that are taking place in other operating rooms.
Doctors and other team members can have less panic in an emergency situation, whereas before, many moving parts, details, equipment, and staff were required to be prepared on a minutes notice but the new operating room will reduce those types of situations.
The project by Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation came in at roughly $332,000 and was declared officially open today (May 9).
