The College of New Caledonia has been anticipating cuts to programs and reducing staff numbers due to new restrictions on international student coming to Canada.

There have been concerns about layoffs at the College of New Caledonia after the federal government began reducing the number of international students allowed in the country last year.

However, there is no official comment from the college on when or how many jobs will be cut.

“In response to federal government restrictions involving international students, CNC has undergone a comprehensive review of the college’s operations, services, and programs across the six campuses to ensure we remain responsive to students, community, and economic growth in the region," reads a statement from the college sent to The Citizen on Thursday, Jan. 16. "Subsequently, we’re looking at opportunities to better align programs and academic schools and optimize our current resources."

The college states that talks are ongoing with regard to staffing levels.

"As part of this review, CNC’s executive team is working collaboratively with senior leadership and the union executives," the statement reads. "In this process, we are honouring our personnel policies and collective agreements. As these conversations are still ongoing, CNC is currently not in the position to comment on workforce-related changes.”
