The air at the Hardwood Manner apartments had to be cleared of the distinct smell of pepper spray Thursday.
Police were called to the Queensway building at about 1 p.m. when residents complained of someone discharging pepper spray during an altercation.
"The building didn't have to be cleared, and from what I heard I am sure everyone is OK," said an apartment manager named Marie.
The fire department was called to the place to use their industrial fans to circulate the bad air out and fresher air in.
"We were there long after the fact, just to vent the building of the irritant," said deputy fire chief Kelly Gilday. "It did not take them long, probably 15 or 20 minutes. Those fans can move a high volume of air in a short period of time.
Gilday said getting called to clear out pepper spray fumes is a rare event. No medical attention was needed for anyone firefighters encountered at the building and Gilday did not know the details of the altercation that preceded the pungent cloud being set off.
Police were contacted for comment but did not respond by deadline.
