A new ecological educational centre has opened in the new Lax Süülda Container Market along Prince Rupert’s waterfront.
North Coast Ecology Centre, run by a non-profit society, showcases the ecological diversity and richness of the north coast region. The container market opened on May 3 and is expected to operate each year during the cruise ship season in Prince Rupert, the ecology centre opened on June 17.
“This new Ecology Centre represents a significant step toward realizing our organization’s ultimate goal of opening a permanent ecological education centre in Prince Rupert in the future,” North Coast Ecology Centre Society chairperson Caitlin Birdsall said.
The centre offers hands-on exhibits and static displays highlighting local land, marine and freshwater species from B.C.’s north coast, and some of the conservation efforts being taken to protect them.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority Community Investment Fund provided half of the $66,684 start-up costs for the centre.
“We commend the North Coast Ecology Centre Society for bringing this project forward to help create a new asset for our community that supports education and tourism in an accessible way,” Prince Rupert Port Authority president and CEO Shaun Stevenson said.
