Northern B.C. elementary students release 500 sturgeon into Nechako River

This is the fifth year in a row of the Nechako White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative

Every sturgeon counts.

That’s the message from the fifth Nechako White Sturgeon Release Day that took place this morning (May 3), where more than 400 northern B.C. elementary school students placed 500 young sturgeon into the Nechako River.

The goal is to re-establish the series, hoping to spawn more of the fish that’s currently listed on the endangered list.

The annual event hosted by the Nechako White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative is also used as an educational opportunity by including students from the Nechako Lakes School District (SD91) to participate in the release.

The juvenile sturgeon were tagged, recorded, and named by each student before the fish was put it in a chute filled with river water and watched as their sturgeon swam away down the river.

Students also visited information booths about ecosystems, conservation, and the Nechako White Sturgeon, as well as took a guided tour of the sturgeon Conservation Centre in Vanderhoof.
