The Northern Capitals have propelled into a position they’ve been eyeing since the beginning of February.
After going 3-0 this past weekend on Vancouver Island against the Seals, Prince George’s female midget AAA hockey squad have found themselves in the middle of a six-game winning streak and in second place with a 17-10-2 record.
If they were to successfully hold that spot over these next two weeks, the ladies will earn home-ice advantage in the opening round of the B.C. league playoffs, a best-of-three series with the first two games played in the comforts of Kin 2 Arena.
The Caps outscored the winless-Vancouver Island Seals 13-1 over three days, including two shutouts from goaltender Tessa Sturgeon on Friday (Feb. 21), a 3-0 score, and Sunday (Feb. 23), a 4-0 triumph.
They’re now two points ahead of Fraser Valley, but the Rush have two games at hand and will close out the season March 7 and 8 against Greater Vancouver.
As the Comets are well out of reach for the B.C. regular-season title, both the Capitals and the Rush are hoping to win this weekend to better their chances for that second-place finish.
This will make for an intense, gritty series Friday through Sunday (Feb. 28, 29 and March 1) when the two teams square up against each other on Prince George ice.
It may also be a highly offensive battle after Paige Outhouse and Brooke Norkus each recorded four points on the Island, combining for three goals and five assists.
For Captain Outhouse, she reached the 20-point plateau with an assist on Brette Kerley’s 16th of the season yesterday morning for her team-leading 21st point.
Those Caps were three of nine different players with multi-point performances on the weekend, including Brooklyn Hutchings, Destiny Bautista, Ella Boon, Ocean Andersen, Hailey Armstrong and Pyper Alexander.
Sunday was also memorable for defence Brooklyn Hill, who potted her first career female midget AAA goal with 9:19 left in the second period.
The 16-year-old had 11 points last year, but were all assists.
Forward Nancy Moore also scored the Capitals’ second shorthanded marker of the season with 91 seconds remaining in Saturday’s (Feb. 22) contest en route to a 6-1 victory.
Cadence Petitclerc-Crosby was between the pipes in that same game for her eighth win this year.
