The demolition of the BC Hydro building in Prince George should be complete by the end of this week.
Local company Western Thermal and Demolition won the $850,000 contract to take down the surplus structure, which included the removal of some asbestos and other hazardous materials. It has been an ongoing process all spring, beginning with the interior materials. Now the time has come for the excavators to move onto the site and bring the shell down.
The site will be turned into a parking lot and the general area landscaped. The building's removal was made possible by the 85,000-square-foot new BC Hydro regional headquarters built next door.
BC Hydro officials said the construction project allowed three sites in Prince George to be consolidated into a single operation. The life expectancy of this new structure is 75 years. The construction investment was about $25 million.
