Olympic torch relay route released

Starting at Van Bien elementary school and then winding its way through downtown before finishing at Exhibition Park, the Olympic torch will be taking a long and circuitous route once it reaches Prince George later this month. To arrive here on Fri.

Starting at Van Bien elementary school and then winding its way through downtown before finishing at Exhibition Park, the Olympic torch will be taking a long and circuitous route once it reaches Prince George later this month.

To arrive here on Fri., Jan. 29, its trip through the city starts at Van Bien at 5:09 p.m. and from there will be carried along Upland, Ferry, Highway 16, Range, Westwood, Massey, 15th, Patricia, Dominion, Third, Victoria, Seventh, Civic Plaza, Ninth, Winnipeg, 13th, Edmonton, 15th, Ospika and Keller before arriving at Exhibition Park for a celebration starting at 6 p.m.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have the Olympic flame come to Prince George,through our neighborhoods to unite our community in a celebration of the Olympic spirit," said Coun. Dave Wilbur, co-chair of the Prince George torch celebrations task force.

People wanting to see the torchbearers carrying the flame are advised to be on the right hand side of the road.

- Free transit will be provided to the celebration.

Two buses will be used at each of Spruceland and Pine Centre to shuttle passengers to and from Exhibition Park every 15 minutes starting at 5 p.m. and lasting until 9:30 p.m.

- The torch celebration, which runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lot at Exhibition Park will feature family oriented entertainment showcasing both local talent and a troupe brought in by Olympic sponsors.

Local national junior alpine ski team member Alix Wells will carry the torch on its last leg at the celebration site and light the cauldron.
