The doctor is now in at the Baldy Hughes Therapeutic Community.
The addiction treatment centre set in the rural seclusion west of Prince George has a new medical director and community physician, and he is well known to the local public.
Dr. Michael O'Malley is a veteran doctor in this area, and has been an active volunteer in many areas of interest as well. He is acclaimed for his expertise in the addictions field, in particular. He is a director on the BC Council of Substance Abuse, he holds a fellowship with the College of Family Physicians and is an associate professor of medicine at the University of British Columbia.
"We are extremely pleased and grateful to have a physician of Dr. O'Malley's caliber and experience," said executive director Marshall Smith. "This appointment will not only increase the level of care we provide, it will decrease the cost and burden on the health care system."
The appointment was made possible by a $37,500 grant received from the Spirit of the North Health Care Foundation.
"The grant signifies an expansion of the foundation's focus," said SNHF second vice president Hugh Nicholson, "to assist centers of excellence in the north that may not necessarily be owned by Northern Health but which deliver essential care to people in our region."
