Sikh martial arts, tons of free food, and a display of beautiful floats are a few of the things you can expect to see at the Nagar Kirtan Vaisakhi Parade this Saturday (May 18) in Prince George.
'Nagar' means town and 'Kirtan' means singing of spiritual hymns.
Nagar Kirtans are led by Guru Granth Sahibji and the Panj Piarey representing the body and spirit of the Guru.
Nagar Kirtan is the custom of holding public processions, singing holy hymns, and sharing their joy throughout the communities.
The Guru Nanak Darbar Society of Prince George invites the community to join Sikhs as they celebrate Vaisakhi as everyone is welcome regardless of their faith, sexual orientation, spiritual beliefs, etc.
What is Vaisakhi?
Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi as the creation of the Khalsa, which is a collective of committed Sikhs (male and female) who are the leaders and defenders of the Sikh Way.
The Khalsa was created to fight oppression and uphold freedom and basic needs for all people.
The parade procession starts at 10:00 a.m. beginning at Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara (4298 Davis Road) and will be stopping at the CN Centre for announcements, displays and food booths including vegetable treats, samosa’s, chickpeas, and refreshments.
Also, everyone is asked to cover their head with a bandanna, scarf, turban, or shawl. This is to show respect for Guru Granth Sahibji and the procession.
Organizers will be handing out head coverings (bandannas) at the event, however, they do ask that if you are able, please bring your own.
You can catch this between 12 and 2:00 pm, while the whole event takes place between 10 a.m. (when the parade starts) and 4:00 p.m. (when it returns to Gurudwara) on Saturday.
