Digital literacy is becoming important by the day as children and teens spend more time connecting virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In order to make sure kids have the tools and knowledge to make good choices, the Prince George Public Library (PGPL) is hosting a free special program on internet safety.

Parents and youth will have the opportunity to learn how to be 'good digital citizens' and protect themselves online during a virtual program that takes place tomorrow night (Nov. 10).

The 45-minute program is called Smart Choices Online and will focus on privacy, online etiquette, internet safety and using the internet effectively.

It's set to take place on Zoom from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. and participants do not need to register in advance.

“Virtual interactions and experiences have become more important than ever to people of all ages in the era of COVID-19, but it is important to have the skills to ensure these interactions happen safely and kindly for everyone,” says Larissa Clotildes, Library Assistant – Youth Services, in a news release.

“The program is open to ages 5-19, but we will be running it in two concurrent sessions. Once someone joins the Zoom call, they will be sorted into a breakout room based on their age.”

Next week, 10 to 18 year-olds are invited to learn how to relax and unwind as Teen Librarian Chris Knapp offers strategies for coping with internet fatigue.

Focusing on the importance and benefits of positive mental health for youth, the session will explore fun and engaging meditative activities and movement techniques. Yoga mats are optional, but encouraged.

This program is called Screens, Fatigue and Breaking Free and will take place on Google Hangouts on Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 7 to 8 p.m.
