School District 57 (SD57) has a pre-scheduled non-instructional day for students across Prince George next week.
So, what do your kids plan on doing for the whole day? Sitting around the house? Playing video games? Reading books? Shovelling and de-icing the driveway?
Well, if your child is currently exploring more than one sport, they may want to check out a camp set for all-day Monday (Jan. 27) specializing in hockey and basketball.
This is the second multi-sport event to be hosted by BC Hockey in three months as a way for kids to remain active while also recognizing the benefits of grasping several skills.
“If they play multiple sports, they’ll enjoy sports longer,” said BC Hockey North Regional Centre Manager Allan Bristowe to PrinceGeorgeMatters in an interview ahead of November’s hockey/soccer session.
“It’s more of a long-term athlete development plan and that’s the main idea. There are stats that prove you get burned out if you stick to one sport too much; 43 per cent have fewer regrets, fewer serious injuries and it’s what top athletes do. Wayne Gretzky, Russell Wilson, Christine Sinclair, male or female, it doesn’t matter, you play multiple sports you’ll last longer in sports.”
BC Hockey is partnering with Northern Bounce, a local basketball program run by Jordan Yu, head coach of the Duchess Park Secondary senior boys team.
He will be overseeing the training sessions on the court of the Prince George Roll-A-Dome.
There are nearly 10 spots left for the camp, which will be split between the Dome and Kin 1 Arena into two age groups (6-9, 10-13) running from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The cost to attend this camp is $110 and more information is available on BC Hockey’s website.
