Remember the old days when you built a soapbox car in your parent’s garage and then raced down a hill to the triumph of a roaring crowd of supporters?
Well, we don’t because it’s been 46 years since there was a soapbox derby in Prince George.
That’s all about to change because, for the first time since 1973, there’s going to be some good ole’ fashioned soapbox car racing in B.C.’s northern capital.
Maychild Media and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince George (BBBSPG) are hosting a soapbox car derby on August 3 at 9 a.m.
The race will take place on Victoria Street starting at Ford Ave. and ending near McCullagh Ave.
Prizes will be given for races and most creative derby car build.
Early bird registration is available online for $35, regular registration available until July 25 is $45, and last minute registration is $55.
However, the event is completely free to watch and enjoy!
All of the derby race rules, like how your derby car must be powered by gravity and you have to wear a helmet, can be found on the derby’s Eventbrite page, where you can also pay your registration fees.
The P.G. Soapbox Car Derby Facebook page also has a lot of helpful information about the event and building a derby car.
