Young outdoor adventurers will get the chance to learn the basics of outdoor survival at a training organized by a national outdoor safety program will come to UNBC tonight.
Staff with AdventureSmart will present an educational workshop, entitled Hug a Tree and Survive, at the Wellwood Theatre on UNBC campus at 7 p.m. The staff will be arriving from Kelowna.
Trent Blair, a member of Prince George Search and Rescue Society, said that outdoor survival skills are particularly important given recent headlines in B.C.
"There has been lots of high profile incidents in the news. We had that search out in Smithers for eight days for the mushroom picker, which we didn't find. There was a lady out in Ladysmith, which we didn't find," said Blair
"More recently, there was Mrs. Poitras, the dog walker that went missing in Abbotsford that we did find after three days."
Blair hopes that the workshop instills the importance of taking proper supplies, including warm clothing and protection from the elements, and of leaving a trip plan with a responsible person.
