The smoke-filled air that rolled into the bowl area of Prince George around 7 p.m. on Thursday evening had many residents expecting to learn a new forest fire had started in one of the tinder-dry areas near the city. But fire officials told The Citizen just prior to press time that the additional smoke, which was brought with it traces of ash that was visible on vehicles, was the result of shifting winds around the Pelican Lake fire -- 140 kilometres west of Prince George -- and the Cassiar Highway fire, near the Yukon border.

An air quality advisory was already in effect, partly due to the fires (see story on page 2).

Meanwhile, a platoon of firefighters from out of province is now in B.C. to battle the burning forest.
