Prince George is host today to a B.C. Liberal Party all-candidate leadership debate for party members.

The Prince George session follows a debate held in Kamloops Wednesday.

The debate in Prince George will coincide with an annual Liberal leadership dinner - that will honour outgoing Premier Gordon Campbell.

The dinner is likely to be Campbell's last visit to Prince George as premier. Campbell has been no stranger to Prince George, making frequent visits to B.C.'s northern capital during the past decade.

In particular, Campbell has been an advocate of building northern B.C.'s emerging transportation corridor as another gateway between North America and Asia. During his last official visit six months ago, Campbell helped break ground on the $100-million cancer treament centre. (See a photo retrospective of Campbell's visits to Prince George on page 14).

The leadership debate will be held at the Ramada Hotel from 3:30 to 5 p.m., prior to the dinner honouring Campbell. The debate is only open to Liberal Party members.

The Liberals will choose a leader on Feb. 26.

The position opened up suddenly in early November when Campbell announced he was stepping down half way through his third term. Campbell's popularity had plunged in the face of public anger over the introduction of the harmonized sales tax.

There are six candidates in the Liberal leadership race: George Abbott, Christy Clark, Mike de Jong, Kevin Falcon, Ed Mayne and Moira Stilwell.
