PHOTOS: Prince George fills house with 400 volunteers for incoming countries at 2020 World Women’s Curling Championships

Teams finalized for March event, people flying from as far as Ontario to help out

We now know which countries will fly into Prince George this March for the biggest international event in women’s curling.

As of this past weekend, 13 teams will officially descend on B.C.’s northern capital for a shot at the big trophy (notice the photos above) at the CN Centre from Mar. 14-22, 2020.

The nations are as follows:

  • Canada (Host)
  • Switzerland (Defending champions)
  • China
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Russia
  • Scotland
  • Sweden
  • United States
  • Italy (Last one in)
  • South Korea (Last one in)

Even more exciting, Glen Mikkelsen, CN Centre Manager and Vice-Chair for the championships, says there will be lots of volunteers to help make the tournament as successful as it can be.

“We’re super-pleased that we have our full contingent of almost 400 volunteers and we’ve got people coming from all over the country,” he said following this morning’s (Jan. 21) official line-up announcement. 

“We’ve got people coming from Ontario to volunteer for us, we’ve got people coming from all over Alberta, throughout British Columbia; they’ve committed the time and expense to come to Prince George to be involved with the event.”

Canada’s team will be the winner of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Feb. 23, the women’s curling nationals taking place in Moose Jaw, Sask. this year.

Mikkelsen added fans from some of the participating countries have been showing excitement about potentially coming to Prince George.

“Just a couple of days ago, we were taking an inquiry from a ticket buyer who was over in Switzerland and worked with our box office. It took about an hour-and-a-half to get everything sorted out as far as communicating and getting things figured out, but sure enough, already we’re having people buying tickets from around the globe to come here in two months.”

The final schedule is said to be ‘released shortly,’ Mikkelsen said.

The World Famous Patch has also been unveiled and will provide the entertainment factor for the nine-day event in the adjacent Kin 1 Arena.

Fans will be able to have meet-and-greet autograph sessions with the teams as well as ‘Up Close and Personal Sessions’ for members of the public to ask questions directly.

Confirmed musical acts are The Dungarees, Cod Gone Wild, Chris Goodwin Trio and Band, and the Chevelles.
