PHOTOS: Prince George chosen by Freedom Mobile as latest B.C. location

Shaw-owned business plants roots in Pine Centre Mall to offer ‘better deals’

Giving everyone the freedom of choice.

That’s the bottom line for a Shaw-based company that has chosen Prince George as one of its primary locations in selling its LTE network and products in the telecommunications market.

A ribbon was cut this morning (Aug. 21) at Freedom Mobile’s new Pine Centre Mall location and dozens of local residents lined up for the 9:30 a.m. grand opening to check out the deals the business had to offer.

Prince George is one of the first five in-person stores the business has opened in B.C. for 2019, much to the delight of Mayor Lyn Hall.

“Where it be broadband, whether it be internet service, whether it be the opportunity to connect in rural and remote locations is key,” he said, while also adding the city and its staff deals in a partnership with Shaw in its telecommunication needs.

“I think with the opening of Freedom Mobile, it just adds to that opportunity for residents throughout not just Prince George, but the entire northern and interior part of the province. It's an important piece of what we try to do from an economic development perspective [...] we’ll continue to talk about this for a really long time.”

Earlier this year, Freedom Mobile put in a tower in front of Lakewood Alliance Church at 5 Ave. and Ospika Boulevard to better its cell service for residents.

This is one of the many investments the company has put forward in its $3.4 billion plan to improve coverage as it expands across Canada as told by Freedom Mobile Vice-President Chima Nkemdrim.

He came to B.C.’s northern capital today for the formal ceremony.

“Four years ago, Shaw took a look at the wireless landscape in Canada and realized that Canadians really deserved better,” said Nkemdrim. “Prices were too high, there wasn’t a lot of competition, and there was a real opportunity in the market. So, we purchased Wind Mobile and made a commitment to bring better prices to Canada and bring Canadians more choice.”

In addition to the physical store, located at the north entrance of Pine Centre Mall, Prince George residents can also consider Freedom for its mobile services at Real Canadian Superstore (2155 Ferry Ave.), and Walmart (6565 Southridge Ave.).
