Hundreds of people gathered at the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre to recognize not only Remembrance Day but the 100th anniversary of armistice.
RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass led the indoor ceremony, which featured the singing of O Canada, the march of the colours, a recitation of In Flanders Fields and speeches by government leaders including MP Todd Doherty, MLAs Shirley Bond and Mike Morris, Lheidli T'enneh Chief Dominic Frederick and Acting Mayor Garth Frizzell.
Students of Elder Edie Frederick from Nusdeh Yoh Elementary School also performed O Canada recited In Flanders Fields in Dakelh.
This year, the parade assembled along Canada Games Way and marched to a temporary cenotaph on Seventh Avenue to accommodate the construction near city hall.
The crowd observed two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. after which an RCAF Hawk aircraft from the 419 Squadron flew overhead.
As this Remembrance Day marks 100 years since the official armistice of the First World War, the city will also hear the Bells of Peace initiative. At sunset on Nov. 11, churches throughout Prince George will ring their bells 100 times at sundown. The bells will ring out once every five seconds for a total of nine minutes.
