PHOTOS: Prince George Spruce Kings struggled in keeping up with the Chiefs

Home side swept by Chilliwack with 5-3 Friday setback

One step forward and two steps back.

That’s how the Prince George Spruce Kings’ 5-3 loss Friday night (Dec. 6) to the Chilliwack Chiefs could be described as they are now 0-3 on a current five-game homestand at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.

In the first two periods, the ‘Kings scored first, but were followed by two unanswered goals by the visitors, making the contest more difficult to muster a comeback and salvage a win.

Mason Waite got things started over eight minutes into the opening frame while on a power-play, scoring his second goal in as many nights for the 1-0 lead.

Nolan Welsh and Nick Bochen earned the assists.

Chilliwack replied with two goals in a 4:18 span late in the period, including on a power-play of their own, and held on to the 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Prince George repeated itself in the second stanza, capitalizing on an early kneeing penalty to Chiefs’ Davis Murray, and tying up the tilt 2-2.

Preston Brodziak’s first of a pair of goals he scored yesterday came 23 seconds into the man-advantage and 56 clicks into the period, with the helpers coming from Andrew Seaman and Evan Orr.

However, deja vu hit the Spruce Kings yet again in watching the Chiefs score back-to-back goals once again, this time 50 seconds apart, giving them a 4-2 cushion going into the intermission.

For a fourth straight period going back to Thursday (Dec. 5), Prince George scored the first goal as Brodziak was able to get the ‘Kings to within one.

Goaltender Jett Alexander was pulled for an extra attacker, but the Chiefs scored an empty-netter to seal the 5-3 victory and hand the defending BCHL champions a third straight loss.

Although Alexander ended the game between the pipes and turned away all nine shots he faced, Carter Woodside got the start and the loss after letting in four goals on 15 shots.

Prince George’s record stands at 11-18-2-3 and now they’ll get to enjoy a week’s break before the next set of games.

The Coquitlam Express roll into the northern capital next weekend, Dec. 13 and 14, with 7 p.m. puck drops.
