PHOTOS: Prince George surpasses $20K on Coldest Night of the Year 2020

More than 100 walkers take the streets to raise homeless awareness

Prince George wore its warm heart on its sleeve this weekend.

The Coldest Night of the Year saw more than 100 residents walk outside Saturday evening (Feb. 22) while also showing support for the homeless community and raising money for a local cause.

On the day of the 2020 event, Event Director Alanna LeCerf said the fundraiser had surpassed $20,000 and, with the final numbers being counted, all the money will go towards the Association Advocating for Women and Community (AWAC).

“These funds help us more than you realize,” said AWAC Executive Director Connie Abe to the participants prior to yesterday’s walk.

“There are also many individuals here tonight who are with us and are in direct receipt of the funds that we’ve raised.”

This was the fourth year in a row Prince George hosted the nationwide movement, which sees residents walk from St. Giles Presbyterian Church and through downtown for either two, five or 10 kilometres.

When walkers returned to the church, they were treated to soup and buns.

In 2019, the local Coldest Night of the Year raised $27,500 for AWAC.
