A member of Prince George's Crown prosecution team was threatened, Thursday afternoon, causing the entire Prince George Courthouse to lock down and evacuate.

The incident happened at 3:48 p.m.

Police would not disclose the way the threat was communicated, the particular public servant who was threatened, or why this particular suspect felt the urge to carry this act out.

The sunshine beat down hot on Wilson Square which is usually bustling with people completing the day of legal business at about that time, but in only moments the area was a barren prairie of cobblestones surrounded by police vehicles.

The entire block and part of the next one on the north side had a solid RCMP perimeter. Members of the BC Sheriffs Service scoured the inside of the massive building but came up empty.

"We secured the building to ensure the suspect was not in the building, and ensure the safety of all in the building, be they employees of the court process or the public doing their business at the Courthouse," said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass.

Douglass did say the suspect's identity was known to police, so their search was targeted.

"The important thing is the Courthouse was quickly secured, the subject of the threat is safe, and we are looking to locate this person," he said.

"Our primary job is the protection of the public, so this is a great concern to us. This is a priority for us and hopefully we will have a positive conclusion quickly."

Douglass said the incident was not gang related.
