Prince George airport (YXS) is continuing to see a steady rise in passenger numbers during the second quarter of 2022.

The airport says 28,621 passengers in April, then 34,084 passengers in May and 35, 365 passengers in June.

“The growth in passenger numbers is an encouraging sign” says Prince George Airport Authority (PGAA) President and CEO, Gordon Duke.

“Pre-pandemic, we saw an average of 41,000 passengers per month in the second quarter.”

YXS has also hosted a number of live fire training sessions over the past few months for Airport Rescue and firefighting staff.

The PGAA has partnered with Firemedix to be able to provide training to other airports across Canada at its fire training facility.

There are few live fire training facilities in Canada and given the constant changes in travel restrictions throughout the pandemic, and the PGAA is looking to provide a ‘made in Canada’ solution for Canadian airports that rely on sending their staff out of country to complete this kind of training.

Things have also been buzzing along at the airport because of its apiary program for keeping honey bees.

In 2021, the Prince George Airport was home to a type-trial apiary and this year even more hives have been added to the program. The hives are located on the airfield close to the fence.

“Having the bees on our property is a great way for us to give back and do our part to help save the bees,” said Duke.

“We look forward to continuing this program for years to come and becoming the ‘beesiest’ airport in Canada”.

The PGAA also ended COVID-19 testing in June.

The service, which was provided by Whitecap Medical RSC over the last year, was closed effective June 15.

The step was taken as the federal government announced testing and vaccination requirements would be suspended.

However, the PGAA would like to remind all patrons of the airport that masks are required at all times in the terminal and on board the aircraft.
