The City of Prince George can boast a gold medal at the 2011 Winter Games thanks to a young biathlete who reached the top of the podium Tuesday.

Biathlete Sarah Beaudry, 16, sprinted through the 7.5-kilometre competition in Halifax on Tuesday in just 22 minutes and 36.9 seconds to reach the finish line ahead of the pack.

Beaudry was followed by Quebec's Audrey Vaillancourt with a time of 23 minutes 27 seconds and Julia Ransom of Kelowna, who finished with a time of 23 minutes 53.3 seconds.

Beaudry is one of a dozen local athletes to be pursuing medals at the Halifax Games, and the only to have reached the podium so far.

She has already made her hometown proud with a bronze medal from these Games by taking third spot in the high endurance 12.5-kilometre individual race on Sunday with a gruelling time of 45 minutes and 31.8 seconds.

And she may not be done yet. Beaudry competes in the 10-kilometre pursuit today.
